The water sports that are going to be Olympic at the next games in Paris 2024
One of the most anticipated sporting events in the world is the Summer Olympics, which will be held in Paris in 2024. En these Olympics, there will be new Olympic water sports, a big change full of novelties, such as the introduction of the kiteboarding (in particular kitefoil) recognised as an Olympic water sport.
In the run-up to the event, top sailors, kiters, windsurfers and other water sportsmen and women, such as Alejandro Climent (KANARA user)are preparing for the opportunity to winning an Olympic medal in the new Olympic water sports.
In this blog, we show you a little bit more about what to expect at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, from which Olympic water sports are making their debut and which ones return following Tokyo 2020.
New Olympic Water Sports
The new Olympic disciplines within Olympic water sports making their debut at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games including kiteboarding (kitefoil) and 49er are as follows.
There will be 3 categories in nautical events: Men, Women & Mixed
For the Women’s category, the official sailing events are:
- Skiff – 49er FX
- Kiteboarding
- One Person Dinghy – ILCA 6
- Windsurfer – iQ Foil
For the Men’s category, the sailing events include:
- One Person Dinghy – ILCA 7
- Skiff – 49er
- Windsurfer – iQ Foil
- Kiteboarding
Mixed sailing events include:
- Multihull – Nacra 17 Foiling
- Two Person Dinghy – 470
Olympic Water Sports Returning for Paris 2024
Surfing returns as an Olympic water sport in 2024
Teahupoo, Tahiti is the official home of the surfing's return to the Olympic Games. Since surfing will continue to be an Olympic water sport as in Tokyo 2020. However, the athletes will not be in Paris because the city does not have a beach or artificial facilities to host the Olympic sport.
"In surfing, Teahupo'o is a sacred site, rich in history and tradition and undoubtedly one of the most exciting and consistent waves in the world for our sport," said the International Surfing Association (ISA).
Surfing has already become an Olympic water sport at the Tokyo Games in 2020, will continue at Paris 2024, and will most likely also be part of the programme for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
Rowing and canoeing will comeback as Olympic water sports
The well-established events of canoeing, kayak & rowing also return in the Paris 2024 Olympics to remain Olympic water sports.
The Paris 2024 Olympics will host the men's and women's slalom and sprint events at the Vaires-Sur-Marne Nautical Stadium for canoeing and kayaking- a facility ideally suited to host these events for both men's and women's events. Olympic water sports which are on their way to becoming an Olympic tradition. For rowingThere will be 14 events and they will be held at the same venue as the slalom and sprint events.
The Paris 2024 Olympics will not include coastal rowing as an Olympic water sport.but it may be on the agenda for Los Angeles in 2028. It is one of the categories that has been left out of the Olympics like other water sports events.
Traditional Olympic Water Sports
Swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polowill be present at the Paris Olympics. These Olympic water sports are a great draw for the publicas many of these sports have been part of the Olympic Games since the beginning.
They are irreplaceable events for the Olympics; every four years athletes compete in these sports for medals. However, that hasn´t prevented the introduction of new categories, such as the 4×100 mixed relay that was witnessed at Tokyo 2020. The first time that this discipline was held within swimming as an Olympic water sport.

There are more than 800 days to go until the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Top sailors and water sports athletes are preparing to compete for medals in Olympic water sports.. It will be a tough challenge, which will require a lot of practice and a lot of competition.
Many of the sailors and water sportsmen and women use the KANARA Sport app to train and compete in preparation for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
